Sam Sam
Light through the cracks
On March 2022, I documented the lives of a group of women in Sam Sam, a neighborhood of Pikine, one of Dakar many suburbs.
These women —most of them only young girls— had been connected for some years to learn the essential skills —sewing, cooking, reading and basic arithmetic operations— that would enable them to build their future.
I was amazed to witness the quiet strength of courage, solidarity and shared learning. Over the years, these young women had created spaces of care and trust, some of them supporting others across generations.
This project reflects on universal desires — hapiness, dignity, belonging and the right to self-determination — as lived through the everyday gestures and shared experiences of a community. And while most of these women had their own mobile phones, their persistent acts of care and collaboration were the actual broader reflection on what it means to be connected in today’s world.
